How to Build a Low Cost Faraday Cage to Protect Electronics
Protection for Electronics (Semi-Conductors) from a Nuclear Electro Magnetic Pulse event (EMP). Another INDICATOR.
Civil Defense Manual Jack Lawson November 21, 2025
A low cost Faraday Cage with insulating cardboard lining, can, lid and one of my foil wrapped radios.
I’m reposting this from 5 years ago as I’ve had many requests about Faraday Cages since.
FIRST, these following items are basic items that are MUST HAVE to survive a Disaster Crisis or Catastrophic Event…
Water stored (A renewable ‘treatable to potable water’ source if the Crisis becomes long term).
Emergency Food Storage (AND alternative food sources from gardening, area gathering of wild edibles, fishing and hunting if the Crisis becomes long term).
Medical aid and medicines (substitutes for these or slow weening from these medicines if the Crisis becomes long term).
Shelter and appropriate clothing and footwear.
Weapons, magazines, spare parts, cleaning equipment and ammunition.
A much more comprehensive and detailed list of Preparedness and Survival items is found in the Civil Defense Manual.
What comes first?
Now, the internet is full of arguments as to the correct priority each of these items. This is a conflict amongst many people and continues to be a point of contention amongst preparedness and survival people. Actually, there is no correct answer for the order of these… they are ALL necessary for survival.
Without water, you won’t survive to use your weapons to defend yourself for more than a few days to a week.
Without food, you won’t survive to use your weapons to defend yourself after a month.
Without medicines, some will not survive to help defend the group after a few days.
Without shelter, in some climates, it would be difficult, if not impossible, to survive for more than a few days.
Without weapons, spare parts and ammunition, you can’t keep others from taking everything… your Food, Water and other supplies and in the process probably killing you and everyone in your group or Neighborhood Protection PlanTM (NPP). See “The Takers” below.
In all the decades I’ve been involved with Preparedness and Survival, I’ve seen the overwhelming majority of ‘Preppers’ obsessed with firearms and ammunition to the exclusion of everything else necessary for survival, especially Food and Water. You can’t eat or drink firearms and ammunition. They won’t keep your body functioning properly or keep you dry and warm! Unless the Crisis goes ‘Full Mad Max,’ I rate firearms and ammunition less of the INITIAL survival preparedness equation. You can die sitting in the middle of your huge arsenal of firearms and ammunition as your life will end without Food and Water.
Further, there is a mentality amongst most of these people obsessed with firearms of what I call “The Takers,” who will do what the term describes. These are ‘survivalists’ and ‘preppers’ who have loads of firearms and ammunition. BUT… THEY DO NOT STORE FOOD AND WATER… BECAUSE THEY INTEND TO TAKE YOUR FOOD AND WATER BY VIOLENT MEANS.
As the Legend of Survival, SELCO says… “Firearms first!”
Whether you DO OR DO NOT have experience with firearms or tactics… you should be committing your first effort of Preparedness and Survival to obtaining and training with firearms… and tactics. Getting up to speed through classes with NC Scout and other trainers listed at the end of this essay. Further, I have a comprehensive list of trainers in areas throughout the United States in the Civil Defense Manual. If you cannot protect yourself or family… you will not survive.
But then you MUST move on to Food and Water Storage… and forming a neighborhood defense plan like my Neighborhood Protection PlanTM … or you will be joining a group of “The Takers” to survive. You will not like their methods and morals and you will be hungry or starving most of the time. Like I say… “If you don’t have a plan and aren’t prepared to survive a Catastrophic Event… you will become part of someone else’s plan, whether you like it or not. Your part in their plan may simply just be that you’ll be their victim that they rob and kill and or EAT You and Yours.”
None of this essay and information will help you if you don’t have a cooperative defense of your area with your neighbors. For a successful group effort to defend an area with a Neighborhood Protection PlanTM you also need…

In addition to the above ABSOLUTE NECESSITIES… is the Faraday Cage.
Why do you need a Faraday Cage?
Because the possibility of a “Man-Made” Electro Magnetic Pulse event (EMP), or as by the term used by the military… the High-Altitude Electro Magnetic Pulse event (HEMP)… has become way, way more probable now than it ever has. It can happen instantly, without warning. During my time in the U. S. Air Force (USAF) I armed and disarmed the W40 ThermoNuclear warhead for some 14 months after attending Advanced electronics training and USAF Nuclear Weapons Training.
I learned that the most likely strategy prior to a Nuclear ground attack, would be that 6 or more High Altitude (250 Kilometers up) Nuclear EMP generating explosions would be set off over the Continental United States before... and maybe again, after the conventional Nuclear ground attack. These would cause an Electro Magnetic Pulse that would impact the areas below them, creating huge surges in voltage going through existing electrical lines and electronic circuits, destroying electrical transmission infrastructure and electronics. This EMP would not be seen, felt or heard (seen only if you’re looking into the sky when the burst occurs). The HEMP/EMP is slightly different and much more damaging than Mother Nature’s wrath of a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME)… but both are close cousins.
You won’t need a Faraday Cage after an EMP, if you didn’t have your electronics protected by one in the first place. Like a parachute, if you don’t have one when you need one, you probably won’t ever need one again. Put your electronics in a Faraday Cage NOW-NOW. The EMP is the one Extraordinary Catastrophic Event that is becoming more possible as each day goes by, especially because of this Ukraine-Russia War and the threats flying between the Nuclear Powers.
What does a powerful EMP do?
It totally destroys any electronic semi-conductor… which all electronic devices have one or more of. Your iPhone, computer, the internet, cell phone towers are destroyed and do not work. It also burns out electrical transformers. Most of the Military would be rendered useless because of their total reliance on electronics and Global Positioning Systems and are not protected enough from EMP. The Russians developed EMP Focused Nuclear weapons in secret that are FOUR TIMES as powerful as what our military has “hardened” their electronic systems for. ALL computers that control systems, and that is virtually every system, would be destroyed. In short, America would be thrust back into the Dark Ages.
I will concentrate here on protecting against EMP (not CME). Both are explained in detail in the Chapter “Emanuelson on preparing for an EMP attack or Solar Storm” of the Civil Defense Manual. Protection against Mother Nature’s Solar Flare or Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) is also discussed extensively in the Chapter Authored by Jerry Emanuelson, one of the foremost experts knowledgeable in the effects of EMPs and Solar Flares.
The Electro Magnetic Pulse event (EMP) will destroy… anything with a semi-conductor in it… which means almost all electronics. It is important to understand that a Faraday Cage is not necessary for protection of electronics from an X-Class Solar Storm or damaging Coronal Mass Ejection. But a Faraday Cage is necessary for protection of electronic items from a Nuclear generated Electro-Magnetic Pulse or EMP event. Our lives REVOLVE around electronics for Food, Water, communications, systems that deliver Life Essential Items, transportation, security and leisure.
In my opinion, the Globalist Elites are losing their grip on crushing the free will of people of the world and forcing them to behave like mindless calloused insects in their intended Human Ant Colony. People’s logic will not accept the Globalist Elites twisted upside-down agenda that is alien to Human Nature, decency and common sense. Leading the resistance to this are Americans… who are the only people on the planet armed to the teeth that can resist force with force. I don’t see the disarmament of Americans fitting into the Globalist Elite’s time table agenda. So, they will have to eventually eliminate us… with a real pandemic or EMP.
Not the cold and flu version of the contrived pandemic/epidemic… but something much more deadly or devastating to the population of the U.S. such as… the Electro Magnetic Pulse event. If you think the Covid was natural… not a contrived, purposeful human endangering experiment…. good luck to you! My Mother-In-Law had both of her legs amputated from Covid clotting.
So, go away with your fuzzy brained, warm hearted and foolish emotional mentality of “I did my duty and got my Covid shot!” and “We’re all in this together!” and “Kumbaya!” MainStream News Media inspired ant colony bullshytte. Be a fool some other place away from me that doesn’t endanger Me and Mine… GO AWAY! America is interfering with the Globalist Elite’s Great Reset timetable, woke agenda, continual confiscation of our money and their “Forever Wars.” America and Americans are their last obstacle.
Another INDICATOR
Am I wearing my tin foil hat again? Well, it seems I have good company for this INDICATOR. Deagle.com (or Deagel), is a mysterious rival of the British two-century old “Janes” …and if you don’t know what “Janes” is… you need to color outside the lines more often. Deagle.com, like Janes, is connected to anyone and everyone in intelligence and governmental circles.
Deagle.com shocked all that read their 2021 report. If you question the above… research the 2025 ‘Deagel.com’ Forecast: “War, Population Reduction, & The Collapse Of The West…” forecasting a 70% or more reduction of the United States Population sometime around the end of 2025. Deagle.com has never stated why, what would cause this die off at that time or what they based this on. But they’re substantial in knowledge and forecast of predictions… not a fart in the wind. Well Folks, we’re coming up on that time! If it doesn’t happen then, mathematical odds are that it WILL still happen. It is impossible that it won’t.
What is a Faraday Cage?
Faraday Cage. Named after the British Scientist Michael Faraday… who discovered the principle of Electro-Magnetic Induction in the 18th Century. The basic principle of a Faraday Cage is that the metal enclosure totally surrounds, insulates and isolates an electronic object inside it and protects it from extremely high ‘spike’ voltage that permeates the air and floats across the ground from a EMP as a powerful electrical charge until it goes to ground at Mother Earth. These ‘spikes’ of voltage will destroy semiconductors and delicate electronics unless they’re in a Faraday Cage.
All electronic items or backups of them, must be in a Faraday Cage… small Solar Panels charging units, rectifying diodes for large Solar Panels, chargers, radios, laptop computers, electronic gun sights… anything with semi-conductors, microprocessor circuits or LED displays must be put in a Faraday Cage.
If your safe has an electronic lock on it… have a manual method of opening it because your electronic safe lock will not work either. Remember to put electronic gun sights, any night vision sights and night vision equipment that are electronic, in a Faraday Cage too, to protect from EMP. DO NOT rely on your steel gun safe to protect against EMP. Safes give very poor EMP protection unless specifically designed to shield from EMP. See the Chapter ‘Emanuelson on preparing for an EMP attack or Solar Storm’ in the Civil Defense Manual.
EMP voltage ‘hangs’ around the outside metal of the Faraday Cage, which acts like a ‘skin’, protecting the electronic objects inside. Eventually, this high voltage dissipates harmlessly. Otherwise it fries all unprotected electronics. A Faraday Cage is for two-way radios, base station emergency radios and any other LED or electronic equipment. Back up your computer on a DVD or CD type disk… these are not affected by EMP, but put one laptop computer in your Faraday Cage with all your applications and data on it.
When you don’t store your electronics in a Faraday Cage… You and Your electronics equipment will be in the ‘New Dark Ages’… like everyone else when an EMP strikes. Your equipment will only be good to use as paper weights.
Reference the “Specialized To Do and Items needed for different “EXTRAORDINARY” Catastrophic Events in the Index of the Civil Defense Manual for the Electro Magnetic Pulse event (EMP) and Solar Storm “EXTRAORDINARY” Catastrophic Event-Specialized To Do and Items needed. These “EXTRAORDINARY” Catastrophic Events will IMMEDIATELY plunge the world into chaos… not slowly, over a period of time like other types of Events listed in the Civil Defense Manual… but IMMEDIATELY!
Because of the threat of EMP, you should also have these non-electric items to survive…

A little trivia…
A little trivia item from the Civil Defense Manual-How to jury rig a temporary battery.
The Faraday Cage that you can build from these instructions…
A Faraday Cage as the top photo illustrates is cheap protection and can be constructed now for around $70 to $80. I found many good plans floating around on the internet. I researched and evaluated all features of each, took the best of them and fine tuned them to what I present here. I’ve built a lot of these and have ALL necessary electronic devices, or backups, stored in my Faraday Cages.
The plan for this Faraday Cage is simply a galvanized metal garbage can, with lid and cardboard lined to insulate the contents from the ‘metal skin.’ The size is determined by what and how much you want to store in it. The ‘metal skin’ keeps the huge electrical pulse from entering the Cage and damaging the contents.
What you need…
The metal container and ‘the made for it’ lid. The METAL (NO PLASTIC) ammo or garbage can you decide to use. Buy a new heavy galvanized metal garbage can with matching lid, such as the 31 gallon garbage can, the Behrens Company manufactures. Made in the USA at https://www.behrens.com/products/. You can buy these at Home Depot. Stay away from the cheap Chinese and foreign manufacture products as the galvanizing on these is uneven and the seaming is poor in addition to the thickness of the can metal is way too thin. Metal ammunition cans will work also as long as the rubber sealing gaskets are removed, the paint on the edges where the rubber touched sanded to bare metal to make good electrical contact between the lid and box. The rubber seal needs to be replaced with rolled up metal screen.
Insulating Cardboard. Visit your local hardware store and get the cardboard that a refrigerator gets shipped in or another item that gives you a large piece. The size of the piece of cardboard you need depends on the size of the metal container you use. One piece is easier to fit than two or more pieces in my experience. The height measurement of the can plus 18 inches, will suffice for the height. Measuring around the widest diameter of the can and adding 12 inches, will give you the length you will need of cardboard that you will cut to fit the can. You can use a couple of smaller pieces of cardboard if you overlap them and hot glue them in place. Hot glue any cuts or hand holds in the cardboard.
Screen door screen. You need about 8 foot by 6 inches of this screen. NO PLASTIC, aluminum or metal only.
Foam material. Foundation foam or other 8 foot by 2 inches. Hot glue screen on the inside of the can ensuring the can lid contacts the screen full all around.
Optional-A circular piece of 1/2 inch plywood that will set as a shelf mid-way down the can to rest at the taper about half way down or where ever you want to glue supporting blocks to position it.
Hot Glue Gun. Ouch! Darned things burn you easily and the glue stays hot for about 10 minutes! This will glue the cardboard pieces into place… and they won’t come out easily. You can glue cardboard to cardboard, cardboard to metal can and screen and foam to cardboard and metal can surfaces. Do ALL cardboard edges.
Gloves… to keep you from burning fingers and hands.
Tape measure.
Black Sharpe marker.
Box cutting knife.
Industrial scissor.
Two, three foot long 2 by 4 or 2 by 6s.
Open Faraday Cage with insulating cardboard and lid
This is what your Faraday Cage cardboard liner will look like before you cut this shape (called a ‘Chord’ or ‘‘Circular Segment’) out of your large cardboard piece.
To have the inside vertical wall of the can correct, it will be a geometric shape known as a ‘Chord,’ also known as a ‘Circular Segment.’ To get this to fit your can, lay your cardboard on the floor, lay your garbage can on its side and slowly roll the can from one edge to the other edge of the cardboard, one full turn. While slowly rolling the can, mark the top and bottom of the can where it contacts the cardboard with a black marker every couple of inches. Then cut this out. WATCH YOUR FINGERS, HANDS AND ARMS WHILE CUTTING! Use 2 by 4s by putting the cardboard between them, stepping on the ‘sandwich’ of 2 by 4s with cardboard sandwiched between and step on the cardboard every inch or so to ‘break’ it and allow you to roll it into a circle to fit into your garbage can.
Building a low cost Faraday Cage… the procedure
Take the largest piece of cardboard for the inside wall. Because the garbage can is larger diameter at the top than the bottom, you’ll have to cut the cardboard to fit. You will have to lay your cardboard out on the floor and carefully roll the can from one end of the cardboard to the other, while marking the bottom and top every two inches or so where the can touches the cardboard as you roll it. This odd-looking marked piece will fit perfectly inside your can if you do not shift the can while rolling and marking the can on the cardboard.
Then you must ‘break’ the cardboard to allow you to roll it into a cylinder with overlapping beginning and end edges to fit into the garbage can. Putting the cardboard over a 2 by 4 or between two of them and lightly stepping down on the edge will ‘break’ the cardboard making it more pliable and allowing you to roll it into a cylinder. I use a hot glue gun to glue the overlapping Chord edges together after forcing it tight against the inside of the can. DO NOT hot glue the top of the cardboard to the can yet.
Cut off the excess cardboard sticking out of the can at the can top. Insert your metal screen between the cardboard and can. Bend the screen over to the outside of the can and hot glue the top edge of the cardboard to the screen and to the metal can.
The top and bottom circular pieces can easily be marked to cut. Trace the outside bottom of the can, then adjust and cut the cardboard diameter to fit the inside bottom of the can AFTER the cardboard is in place for the inside can walls. Hot glue that all the way around to the vertical wall cardboard at the bottom of the can.
Mark and cut the lid of the can by tracing the lid on cardboard and adjusting the cut diameter smaller to compensate for the lid being larger outside than where the cardboard will fit inside the can and hot glued it in place.
Fold the screen into two layers thick and form it around the top edge of the can, ensuring it fits down over the outside of the can and between the top cardboard and can, so when the lid is put on, the metal of the lid touches the metal screen. Hot glue the screen in place to the can wall cardboard.
Cut a three inch strip of foam and cover up to the top of the cardboard wall inside the can. Hot glue the foam just below the top of the can to ensure that the lid metal will contact the screen making a continuous contact of metal to metal all around the can.
Install snap down draw latches to ensure the lid doesn’t accidentally come off.
On a galvanized trash can, the electrical connection between the body of the can and the lid is critical. For this reason, use only a new galvanized trash can for this purpose. Dents and distortions in the roundness of the lid, can and the upper part of the galvanized can severely harm the high-frequency shielding effectiveness of the can by making the fit poor. Also, the lid must be kept very firmly in place for a galvanized trash can to be an effective shield. I spent less than $60 each on these a decade ago.
I put screen door material between the top of the garbage can and the cardboard over the top metal edge of the top of the can and hot glue that into place. Then foam over that hot glued in place.
Fit the cardboard to the inside of the garbage can lid and hot glue that into place. The screen material ensures good contact of the lid to the can and keeps any stray EMP voltage from getting inside the can. I cover the joint between the cardboard and the the can on the inside with foam to keep the aluminum screen from poking fingers. Arrgh! After you stab your fingers about the fourth or fifth time, you will install foam over the screen up to the top of the can opening. The aluminum screen ensures a metal to metal contact around the entire lid of the Faraday Cage garbage can.
Notice in the second photo from the beginning of this essay. That photo shows my open Faraday Cage that I riveted snap down draw latches on the can to pull the lid down tightly against the aluminum screen. The entire inside of the can and lid are lined with cardboard and all is hot glued in place so nothing inside the can can make contact with the metal or screen of the can.
Do not store anything on top of your can or you will crush the lid and destroy the metal seal of the lid to the metal can. Again, store the can a couple of feet off the floor.
How to test your Faraday Cage
How do you know that the Faraday Cage works? When you finish building it, put a portable radio tuned to a local station with the volume turned high in the Faraday Cage. I you can’t hear the radio when the lid is put on, the Faraday Cage is blocking out the signal and you will know EMP will not penetrate the Faraday Cage.
Because an EMP could come in more than one event over days or weeks… do not open your Faraday Cage after the first EMP event… wait. The event may come again, in the same or greater intensity, over the next few days and destroy your once protected equipment. This is a simple and classic military fake out tactic used by an enemy. Generate an EMP… then everyone gets their equipment out of their Faraday Cage… only to be destroyed by their next generated EMP.
It is important that you understand these procedures of the Faraday Cage: that all items inside it are foil wrapped, antennas and power cords unplugged from the devices prior to wrapping them, and that the contents inside must not touch any metal of the can. The can should then be elevated off the floor a couple of feet, not hung by wire, nothing on top of the can and the can should not be touching any metal objects. EMP surges collect along the ground until they dissipate.
Do not ground your Faraday Cage
For most Faraday Cage applications… if you ground your Faraday Cage, it will do the opposite of what you intend it to do. Damage the items inside.
You do not need a Faraday Cage to protect electronic devices disconnected from the electric grid against Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). The CME is also erroneously called or thought of as a Solar Flare by many people but has only the E3 component. The EMP has the E1, E2 and E3 components. I will not give you or me a headache trying to explain them.
YOU MUST have a Faraday Cage to protect electronic devices against manmade Nuclear Generated EMP, but the devices must be disconnected from antennae and power cords AND NO POWER CORD OR ANTENNA CAN PENETRATE THE FARADAY CAGE. Disconnect antenna and cords, coil them and store them in your Faraday Cage.
I REPEAT… ALL ANTENNAS AND POWER CORDS MUST BE DISCONNECTED FROM THE DEVICE YOU STORE IN THE FARADAY CAGE AND MUST NOT GO THROUGH THE METAL WALL OF THE FARADAY CAGE. AGAIN… DO NOT ground your Faraday Cage to an electrical system, plumbing or ground rod!
Anyone who tells you to ground a Faraday Cage to a water pipe or an earth ground is full of shytte. Grounding a Faraday Cage can actually direct more destructive high voltage towards the electronics equipment stored by way of the ground wire to the Faraday Cage channeling more dangerous voltage to the item inside the Faraday Cage. GROUNDING WILL DO THE OPPOSITE that the principle of a Faraday Cage is intended to do… isolate electronic components from Electro Magnetic Pulse damage. Grounding can be beneficial but it has to be done by a person familiar with EMP type of ‘grounding.’ EMP grounding is a science unto itself reserved for those who deal specifically with EMP. Let your Faraday Cage ‘standalone,’ preferably a couple of feet off the floor of where you store it.

In my opinion, Jerry Emanuelson is one of, if not the most knowledgeable person on EMP and Solar Flares in the United States. The Chapter “Emanuelson on preparing for an Electromagnetic Pulse Attack or Severe Solar Storm” by Jerry provides common language clarifying information on this mostly misunderstood phenomenon. Jerry is one of the most intelligent, thorough and common-sense people I have had the good fortune to come across.
